Scrambling
in the Lake District What's
the difference between walking & scrambling and scrambling
&
rock climbing? It's a question I get asked all the time. OK, here goes.
If you have to take your hands out of your pockets on a walk and
scrabble up bits of rock you're scrambling. The difficulty of this
scrambling and how much of it there is determines whether it comes
within the scrambling grading system or climbing grading system, as
scrambling gets harder and goes on for longer it becomes rock climbing.
The Lake District has superb scrambling at every grade: from the awesome setting of the relatively straightforward Striding Edge on Helvellyn or the well-loved Jake's Rake on Pavey Ark that Wainwright trembled his way up, all the way to the fabulous grade 3 Pinnacle Ridge on St Sunday Crag. Scrambling in the Lake District is a great way of exploring more of the mountains, and getting to places that a walking route just wouldn't take you to. However, scrambling deliberately seeks out more difficult ground so is potentially more hazardous, but that's why we do it! If you've never tried scrambling before I can introduce you to good scrambling technique and routes. If you've done a bit of scrambling before and want to move on to steeper and bigger things with the use of ropes, I can help you to achieve your scrambling goal.
